If you are wondering what the Data Protection Day is, here comes a short explanation:
This annual celebration of data protection and privacy has been launched 15 years ago by the Council of Europe, to remember the signature of Europe’s Convention for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data, known as “Convention 108”.
Convention 108 was issued in 1981 as the first legally binding international instrument in the data protection field. It laid out essential principles of data processing and in particular the individual right to privacy. They are still valid and are reflected in the data protection rules of our Organisation.
Today, 55 countries, in Europe and elsewhere, have signed and ratified Convention 108 and various countries have observer status.
So, now you know why on the 28th January, many organisations, national authorities, private companies and other actors organise activities to raise awareness about the importance of data protection and to promote best practices.
Data Protection Day is a big success, it is now celebrated globally and is called Privacy Day outside Europe.
This year three EIROforum Organisations - CERN, ESO and ESA - are teaming up for a fascinating, intriguing and eye-opening tour of data privacy issues that affect all of us.
The CERN speaker will take us on an entertaining journey demonstrating how he managed to evade the snooping virtual eyes and ears of popular social media platforms and web browsers over the course of one day.
An expert from ESO will expose security issues linked to data protection, and ESA will introduce us to CIMON, an AI robotic companion to astronauts on the ISS and some of the features and data privacy implications of such a high-tech companion! Furthermore, several innovative technologies, benefits and risks will be covered.
The online event will be interactive, with 10 minutes between each session for Q&As.
